Junior League of Charlotte

President's Message

Welcome to the Junior League of Charlotte’s new web site! Whether you are a member, interested in becoming a member or visiting this site to learn more about us, we hope that you find what you are looking for on our web site.

The Junior League of Charlotte, Inc. (JLC) is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization of women that has been a leading force in improving the lives of children and families in the Charlotte, North Carolina, community since 1926. Our more than 2,000 members remain committed to the original mission of our founders which is to promote voluntarism, develop the potential of women and improve the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Our purpose is exclusively educational and charitable. Our mission also binds us to the Association of Junior Leagues International that is comprised of 292 sister leagues throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and the United Kingdom. The JLC and the AJLI reach out to women of all races, religions and national origins who demonstrate an interest in and commitment to voluntarism.

We have a rich history in Charlotte. Over the years, the JLC has made a practice of identifying needs in our community and putting all our financial and human resources toward meeting the needs in measurable ways. It is our tradition to create initiatives and programs that are sustainable and will continue to positively impact the community for years to come. Our community is a better place to live thanks to the talented women of the JLC who have donated tireless volunteer hours and to the many non-profits the JLC has helped to develop over the years. The visible results of our efforts to meet the needs of our community include:

  • Children’s Theatre of Charlotte
  • Charlotte Nature Museum
  • Charlotte Speech and Hearing
  • Thompson’s Child Development Center
  • Council for Children
  • Substance Abuse Prevention Services (formerly Drug Education Center)
  • Double Oaks Community Center
  • Levine Children's Hospital Family Resource Center

and many more. Equally as important but less evident are the lives of the countless families we have touched.

From 2006 until 2012, our community focus will be the "Healthy Child Initiative." Our programs, projects and advocacy will focus on the physical, dental and mental health needs of children from infancy to 17 years of age and their families in the Charlotte community. To find out more about the goals of this initiative, please explore the Community Projects page of our web site.

Unique to Junior League organizations, our leadership changes each year. This allows for continual development of additional talented women into community leaders. This year, I have the pleasure to serve as the president of this organization of amazingly talented women. I also serve as chairman of the Board of Directors, which is comprised of 16 elected members. The Board of Directors plans for the future of the JLC while the Management Team, led by President-Elect Amie Hutchison, leads the day-to-day operations of the JLC.

Amie and I, along with the Board of Directors and Management Team, encourage you to explore our website to learn more about the JLC. If you’re interested in additional details that you don’t see online, we’ll be glad to help you find what you need and answer your questions. Contact us at (704) 375-5993 or e-mail. Thank you for visiting our site!
