Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Nurse Funding Shortage

Just the Facts:

  • Approximately 137,000 students attend CMS in grades Pre-K through 12.
  • There are 121 Public Health RNs.
  • These numbers break down to a 1:1,132 Nurse to Student ratio.
  • The national recommendation is a 1:750 Nurse to Student ratio.

In 2006, the Junior League of Charlotte began working with the County Health Department in a campaign to obtain funding for 26 additional nursing positions each year for 5 years.  In 2006, the County added funding for 20 additional nurses.  In 2007, the County added funding for 26 additional nurses and the State added one.  We have continued to move towards greater success not only in seeking funding for more school nurses but for our other positions.

As members of the Junior League of Charlotte, we are in a unique position to make a difference regarding this very important issue. Our children deserve better!  YOU can be a part of the campaign by writing and emailing the County Board of Commissioners and the Members of the General Assembly who represent Mecklenburg County.  In fact, the letters are already written!

Simply follow the instructions below and take action today!  If you prefer to mail the letter, you can find the physical addresses of the County Board of Commissioners and the Members of the General Assembly who represent Mecklenburg County here PDF Document.

If you have any questions, please contact Stephanie Marella (APA Chair) or Allison Bowman (APA Vice Chair).
