Mental Health Awareness

Mental illnesses and disorders are real problems with real signs and real symptoms in need of real solutions.

The Junior League of Charlotte is committed to Putting a New Face on Mental Health by looking into those signs and symptoms, the causes behind them and the community services available to treat them.

Click on the PLAY button below to check out a clip from the Emmy-nominated video Through My Eyes created by the Junior League of Charlotte’s Mental Health Awareness Committee.

How REAL is the problem?

  • Childhood depression is a major health problem.
  • In fact up to 3.4 million children and teens in the U.S. may be experiencing the early onset of bipolar disorder.
  • Anxiety disorders such as Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or Social Phobia affect as many as 10% of young children in the U.S.
40% of nine-year-olds have reported dieting and children as young as 4 have expressed the need to diet.
  • A study of teenage suicide in 2002 found that every 2 hours a young person kills him or herself.
  • 79% of children in the U.S. who need mental health services don’t receive them.

The Junior League of Charlotte’s focus for the next five years, the Healthy Child Initiative (HCI), is diving headfirst into improving not only the physical, but also the mental and emotional, well being of children. We are teaming up with community partners and agencies to raise awareness, to fight stigmas and to help ensure that those who need mental health services in our community receive them.

Through it’s Mental Health Awareness Committee, the Junior League of Charlotte is carrying out the mission to find those real solutions to the very real mental health problems that are affecting our children.
