Public Policy Institute

Public Policy Institute is a non-partisan program designed to provide Junior League of Charlotte members and community partners with training to enhance their effectiveness in the nonprofit arena by deepening their understanding of advocacy and relevant public policy issues. The program focuses on educating participants in advocacy and in navigating our local, state, and federal governments to achieve their public policy goals. Further, JLC members use this training to go on to serve on the boards of nonprofit agencies and commissions, advocate on issues of public policy, and organize model community programs that address need areas to build better communities. It is an award-winning leadership development program, granted by the Association of Junior Leagues international in 2010. Previous public policy experience is not required.

Any Active, Provisional or Sustaining member of the JLC, any member of surrounding Junior Leagues and JLC Community Partners are welcome to register.

Over two sessions, the Public Policy Institute will provide an overview of advocacy – what it means, and some skills and strategies required to effectively and responsibly influence decisions within political, economic, and social systems and institutions.  The trainings will feature expert diverse presenters from government, and from the non-profit and business sectors.  Participants will have the opportunity to gain insight from City leaders and learn how they can have an impact in the community.

Fall PPI Session | Saturday, October 26, 2019

This training will also provide an overview of the structure and responsibilities of Charlotte City and Mecklenburg County government, including city and county boards and commissions on which citizens may serve in Charlotte and Mecklenburg County.  The training will inform participants on how to get involved and engage with local government to address issues of concern.

Spring PPI Session | Saturday, February 29, 2020

This training will provide an overview of our North Carolina General Assembly and the representation of North Carolina in the United States Senate and House of Representatives.  This training will inform participants about how state government and policies affect Charlotte.
