Focus Area

 

Healthy Child Initiative has expanded to include families. The new initiative, Healthy Family Initiative, began during the 2013-2014 Junior League year and runs through 2017-2018. The goal of Healthy Family Initiative is to promote and support the physical, dental and mental health needs of children age 0-17 years and their families in the Charlotte community.

Goals

  • Raise the awareness of family health issues particularly in the areas of physical, dental and mental health in our community. 
  • Educate and connect our community to health and wellness services for children aged 0-17 years and their families.
  • Facilitate on-going dialogue among the community and its leaders regarding the physical, dental and mental health needs of children and their families living in Mecklenburg County to foster long-term solutions/approaches.

Physical Health:

  • The JLC will provide support and/or volunteers to placements and/or projects that offer education on a variety of health topics relating to food choices and physical fitness.
  • The JLC will provide support and/or volunteers to placements and /or projects that offer immunizations and physical examinations for children.  

Dental Health:

  • The JLC will provide support and/or volunteers to programs and/or placements which educate children and their families on the importance of dental health and its effect on the overall health of a child. 
  • The JLC will provide support and/or volunteers to programs which offer dental care and/or tools for better dental care. 

Mental Health:

  • The JLC will provide support and/or volunteers to programs and/or placements which offer support to families and children with mental health needs and for services preventing and recognizing mental health issues.  
  • The JLC will provide support and/or volunteers to placements which serve a population utilizing public/private mental health family services or organizations providing relief from potentially stressful family situations.
