Chameleon’s Journey
Chameleon’s Journey is part of Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region’s Kids Path Pediatric Care program. League volunteers help with a free weekend camp for grieving children (7-16) who have experienced the death of a family member or significant other in their lives. The camp’s goal is for children to learn to share their feelings about the loss experience and receive the support of caring, concerned volunteers while meeting others who know what it is like to walk this journey.
Kids in the Kitchen
Kids in the Kitchen is an international initiative of the Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI) to empower youth to make healthy lifestyle choices and help reverse the growth of childhood obesity and its associated health issues. The JLC will provide lessons and demonstrations related to preparation of healthy meals and snacks in partnership with local community organizations, chefs and nutritionists.
Mental Health Awareness
The Mental Health Awareness committee educates and raises awareness of mental health issues for Junior League of Charlotte members and the Charlotte community at large. They just completed work on a second documentary highlighting how children cope with grief, loss and change. “In Our Words” premiered on WTVI on Wednesday, September 9th and follows our Emmy nominated documentary “Through My Eyes”. In Our Words addresses issues of youth loss, grief, stress, distress, anxiety, abuse and neglect through the stirring and courageous testimonials of five families and commentary by health care providers in a way that identifies long-term solutions while providing hope and inspiration to youth and families facing similar struggles. This film celebrates the strength and resiliency of our youth, and recognizes the importance of family and the community support. Elementary, middle and high school children shared how they handled the loss of a mother due to breast cancer, the loss of a friend in a bus accident, military deployment of a father, the loss of all family income and gross neglect and adoption. In Our Words has already received praise from local healthcare professionals! In Our Words was shown at the 2010 Mecklenburg County Public Health Forum on April 30, 2010, was featured at the National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day - Ask Me How I Am community event on May 6, 2010, and is offered as a course by Parent University. In Our Words is a co-production of The Junior League of Charlotte and WTVI.
