President’s Message

Arina P.Z. Kirk, JLC President 2017-2018

Welcome to the Junior League of Charlotte! We are a diverse organization of nearly 2,000 women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. We provide amazing volunteer and training opportunities to develop the leadership potential of our members. Every day, I am impressed by the members of the Junior League of Charlotte, the work we do in the Charlotte community, and the impact we have on the community, our members, and our organization.

As the 2017-2018 President of the Junior League of Charlotte, I am honored to represent our members, who lead together to make Charlotte a better place. If you are not a member, now is the time to join! I invite you to take advantage of this opportunity and become a part of this committed community of volunteer leaders by joining one of the largest Leagues in the country, either as a member or by participating in one of our leadership programs or providing support for our community programs.

Junior League of Charlotte members have a diverse set of backgrounds and interests and are role models throughout our community. We have a rich history of touching lives and carrying our League experiences with us into our jobs, home and other volunteer roles. These experiences change the lives of the children and their families that we help and enrich the lives of our members at the same time.

Fundraisers such as Lights! Camera! Fashion!  the League’s signature shopping event, and our spring luncheon , enable the work that we do and provide the resources to award grants to Mecklenburg County community agencies that exhibit a need and have an impact on the community. The Little Black Dress Initiative  and March Money Madness  are other important events that enable and support our community programs and impact.

We offer meaningful volunteer activities throughout Charlotte-Mecklenburg County for our members, where ever they are. Children and their families are currently the focus of where we put our time and talents. (In 2018, our focus will change to address Economic Mobility, specifically school readiness for children ages 0 to 5th grade). In 2017-2018, we will grant $52,500 ($50,000 directly to community partners and $2,500 in enabling funds ) to address immediate needs) and 13,240 volunteer hours directly to address community need. We are always drawing from the well of knowledge, expertise and experience our members bring with them to the League to strengthen our impact. Our members are excited to build on our rich history of service as we continue to partner with the community to make Charlotte-Mecklenburg County a better place for children and their families.

Beyond volunteering we invest in the development of our members and rising community leaders. Our Training and Development efforts, along with signature programs including Get on Board, Public Policy Institute and Leadership Development Institute, extend our impact far beyond day to day volunteering. We provide League members and non-League professional women with leadership training that will help their advancement in the workplace, in volunteer opportunities and at home. Because of our commitment to developing women and volunteerism, our members have been recognized with some of the most prestigious awards in Charlotte and North Carolina.

This is a year of growth, impact and opportunity for the Junior League of Charlotte. I hope you will join us in making an impact in our community. #JLCimpact
